ST. PETER, Minn. – After surrendering a first-half goal, the Macalester College women's soccer team tallied two second-half goals less than three minutes apart to defeat Gustavus on the road, 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Gustie Soccer Field. The win gives the Scots a 5-6-2 record overall, including a 2-4-2 mark in the conference. The Gusties drop to 6-5-4, 3-4-1 MIAC.
Gustavus opened the scoring with a goal by Hannah Cisar in the 31st minute. Despite allowing the first goal, Macalester was undeterred and pushed for the equalizer. The effort paid off in the 61st minute, when a shot by junior forward
Julia Hanson (Weston, Mass./Weston) was saved and the rebound was partially cleared. The ball rolled to the top of the penalty area, where junior midfielder
Georgia LeWin-Mills (St. Paul, Minn./Breck School) ran onto the ball and rocketed a shot into the upper right corner of the goal to tie the score at 1-1. The goal was LeWin-Mills' team-leading fifth of the season and fourth in her last three games.
Two minutes and 45 seconds later, first year midfielder
Evelyn Savoie (Northbridge, Mass./Marianopolis Preparatory School) was taken down in the Gustavus penalty area. On the ensuing penalty kick, taken by Savoie, Gusties' goalkeeper Katelyn Olson made a diving save to her right, with the ball deflecting off the post. Senior midfielder
Maia Lemov (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) poked the rebound away from Olson and deposited the ball into the goal for a 2-1 advantage. Macalester limited Gustavus to just one shot over the final 26 minutes to close out a big conference win on the road.
The Scots held a 12-6 edge in shots taken, with junior goalkeeper
Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) making two saves and Olson registering five saves.
Macalester returns home to host St. Scholastica on Wednesday, Oct. 22. The MIAC match begins at 7:30 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
