Women’s Soccer: Macalester Scores Early, Holds On to Beat St. Scholastica, 3-2

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the first 17 minutes but needed a third goal to defeat the College of St. Scholastica, 3-2 in a MIAC game Wednesday night at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots improve to 6-6-2 overall, including a 3-4-2 mark in the conference. The Saints drop to 4-10-3, 2-5-2 MIAC.

The win extends Macalester's streak without a loss to four games (3-0-1) and moves the Scots into a tie for sixth place with Saint Mary's in the MIAC standings.

Just 78 seconds after the start of the game, junior Adi Nhouyvanisvong (Wayzata, Minn./Minnetonka) hit a long shot from 25 yards out on the left side inside the left post for an early 1-0 lead. Then in the 17th minute Nhouyvanisvong took a shot from the right side that rebounded right to first year midfielder Evelyn Savoie (Northbridge, Mass./Marianopolis Preparatory School), who scored from 15 yards out to put the Scots up 2-0. St. Scholastica responded in the 26th minute with a goal by Kaitlyn Sautter to cut the lead in half, 2-1.

In the 65th minute, Savoie had her shot blocked, but the ball bounced to senior midfielder Maia Lemov (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central), who blasted the ball with her first touch into the left side of the goal from 20 yards out to restore the two-goal lead, 3-1. That wouldn't last long, however, as the Saints answered with a goal by Anna Manion just 1:24 later to make the score 3-2. St. Scholastica managed just one shot over the remaining 24 minutes, as Macalester closed out the win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lily Salazar (Oakland, Calif./Bentley Upper School) registered four saves, as the teams each took 13 shots. Saints' goalkeeper Rylee Senich also had four saves.

The Scots continue MIAC play with a game at Hamline University on Saturday, Oct. 25. The match starts at 3:30 p.m. in St. Paul.
