ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team participated in the ITA Regional, held Friday through Sunday at Gustavus Adolphus. The individual tournament served as the season opener for the Scots.
In the doubles draw, seniors
Alexander Poland (Madison, Wis./Madison West) and
George Steinke (Swathmore, Pa./Strath Haven) defeated Jonas Abeleda and Giacomo Lucchesi from St. Scholastica, 8-5 before falling in the second round to Daniel Moore and Yanozie Amedike of Carthage, 8-4. Senior
Karsten Knutsen (Minneapolis, Minn./Riverdale Country Day) and junior
Anton Korolev (Moscow, Russia/Weil) also won their first match, 8-5 over Riley Collins and Sean Gelski of Loras. The Scots' duo then lost to fifth-seeded Daniel Fouchier and Sourabh Terakanambi of Gustavus, 8-4.
First years
Jordan Doi (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani) and
Alec Sargent (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century), and juniors
Matthew Sullivan (Tacoma, Wash./Weil) and
Josh Marine (Honolulu, Hawaii/Summit) also competed in the doubles tournament. Knutsen, Korolev, Sullivan, Doi and Sargent played in the singles tournament and did not advance, with Knutsen taking 17th-seed Diego Guzman of Gustavus to a tie-breaker set before falling.
The Scots also competed in the Midwest Open, with Poland winning two singles matches before being eliminated in the third round, and Marine also winning his first-round match.
Macalester will return to action in the spring.
