ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team competed in the ITA Regional, held Friday through Sunday at Gustavus Adolphus. The individual tournament served as the season opener for the Scots.
In singles, sophomore
Jeffrey Jorgensen (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) advanced to the third round with a victory over Carleton's William Stepanski before losing to Rami Hemaidan of Coe. First years
Matthew Sullivan (Tacoma, Wash./Weil) and
Anton Korolev (Moscow, Russia/Weil) also won first-round matches before falling in the second round.
The Scots also competed in the Midwest Open. Sophomore
Alexander Poland (Madison, Wis./Madison West) won two singles matches to advance to the third round. Seniors
Michael Lockhart (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa) and
Alessandro Mauceri (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz Central), and sophomores
Alexander Hamann (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln) and
George Steinke (Swathmore, Pa./Strath Haven) also won first-round matches.
In doubles, Poland and first year
Josh Marine (Honolulu, Hawaii/Summit) won four straight matches to advance to the semifinals, where they lost to UW-Eau Claire's Matt Gilbert and John Foley. Hamann and Mauceri won their first-round doubles match.
