ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team competed in the ITA Regional, held Friday through Sunday at Gustavus Adolphus. The individual tournament served as the season opener for the Scots.
In singles, sophomore
Sam Hochberger (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) won two matches to advance into Saturday before losing in straight sets to Nate Ackert of Coe. Hochberger also paired with first year
Jeffrey Jorgensen (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) to win twice in the doubles tournament.
The Scots also competed in the Midwest Open, with several players advancing into Saturday's rounds. In singles, senior
Peter Willenborg (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) and first year
Alexander Poland (Madison, Wis./Madison West) both won three matches to make it to the fourth round. Junior
Isaac Hoehn (Middletown, Md./Middletown) and first years
Alexander Hamann (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln) and
George Steinke (Swathmore, Pa./Strath Haven) all won two matches apiece.
In doubles, Hamann and Willenborg paired up to win three matches and advance to the quarterfinals, where they lost to a team from Gustavus.
