Football: Macalester Beats Carleton, Wins Third Straight Book of Knowledge Game

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior quarterback Cody Petrich (Lansing, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) set a school record with six touchdown passes, including three to senior receiver Alec Beatty (Topeka, Kan./Topeka), as Macalester College defeated Carleton, 48-38 Saturday night at Macalester Stadium. The win gives the Scots the Book of Knowledge trophy for the third consecutive year.

Petrich completed 21-of-29 for 368 yards and six touchdowns without an interception. The previous single-game school record was four, set by several quarterbacks.

After Carleton drove 81 yards on their first possession for a 7-0 lead, Petrich threw for his first touchdown to senior running back Jeremy Stephan (Duluth, Minn./Marshall), a 13-yard pass that tied the score at 7-7 late in the first quarter. A 37-yard field goal by Henry Chaussee (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) just before the end of the quarter put the Scots ahead, 10-7.

On their first possession of the second quarter, the Scots found the end zone on a 45-yard pass from Petrich to Beatty, capping a 77-yard drive. After Carleton answered with a 76-yard touchdown drive to make the score 17-14, senior receiver  Jonathan Knee (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) returned the kickoff 59 yards to the Carleton 36-yard line. Petrich eventually hit Knee with a 31-yard touchdown pass to give Macalester a 24-14 advantage. With just 27 seconds remaining before halftime, the Knights went 46 yards and kicked a 36-yard field goal as time expired to make the halftime score 24-17.

Another long pass from Petrich to Beatty, this one for 49 yards, completed a seven-play, 80-yard drive on the Scots' first possession of the second half to take a 31-17 lead. Again Carleton responded with a scoring drive of their own that ended with a touchdown pass from Christian Zaytoun to Dylan Rye to cut the lead to seven, 31-24. Chaussee connected on a 24-yard field goal, then Macalester forced a punt to regain possession. Petrich punctuated a seven-play, 53-yard drive with an eight-yard pass to senior receiver Jack Streibich (Whitefish, Mont./Whitefish) for a comfortable 41-24 edge early in the fourth quarter.

Zaytoun threw another touchdown pass with 11:44 left in the game to pull the Knights to within 10, 41-31. But the Scots responded with a 65-yard drive that ended with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Beatty. Carleton found the end zone one more time to make the score 48-38 with 2:31 left, but the Scots closed out their third victory in a row over the Knights.

Beatty also broke a school record, reaching 20 touchdown receptions in his career. Eight of those touchdowns have come against Carleton, including two last year and three in 2016. Petrich also ran for 52 yards, while Stephan finished with 47 yards on 14 carries. Streibich caught six passes for 50 yards, while Knee ended up with 71 yards on three catches and 160 yards on five kickoff returns. On defense, junior linebacker Dane Ku Blake (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) led the Scots with 10 tackles and an interception. Junior defensive back Kiante Miles (Yukon, Okla./Mustang) also had an interception to go with eight tackles.

Zaytoun completed 46-of-64 for 482 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions, setting the Knights' record for completions. Fletcher Metz caught 15 passes for 148 yards and three touchdowns.

Next up for Macalester is the Paint Bucket Game at Hamline on Saturday, Sept. 8. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
