Men’s Soccer: Macalester to Host Hamline in MIAC Playoffs on Oct. 30

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team will host a quarterfinal match against Hamline University in the MIAC playoffs on Tuesday, Oct. 30 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Macalester Stadium. The Scots (10-5-3) are the No. 3 seed after finishing the regular season with a 7-2-1 record in league play.

Macalester and Gustavus battled for the conference regular-season title on Saturday, with the Gusties earning a 1-0 overtime victory. The loss dropped the Scots into a third-place tie with St. Thomas, with Macalester receiving the No. 3 seed due to a win at St. Thomas on Sept. 29.

Senior midfielder Clayton Smith (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) leads Macalester with seven goals and 14 points, and ranks fifth in the conference in goals. Senior defender Logan Harper (Westwood, Mass./St. Mark's School) has four goals and two assists, while sophomore forward Floyd Krom (Naaldwijk, Netherlands/UWC-Costa Rica) has four goals and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Colton Wenig (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) ranks among the MIAC leaders in goals against average (0.73, fourth), save percentage (.794, fifth) and shutouts (five, second).

Earlier this season, the Scots defeated Hamline on the road, 2-0 on Sept. 12. Smith and Krom found the net just 3:27 apart early in the second half, as the Scots held a 14-5 advantage in shots. Adam King leads the Pipers with five goals and six assists for 16 points on the season.

Tuesday's other quarterfinal game features fourth-seeded St. Thomas hosting fifth-seeded Augsburg, also at 2:00 p.m. Following the quarterfinal round, the lowest remaining seed will visit top-seeded Gustavus on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 2:00 p.m., while the highest remaining seed will play at Carleton on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. The semifinal winners will meet in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the highest remaining seed. The MIAC Tournament champion receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Tickets for Tuesday's game are $10 for adults and $2 for students. Children five and under are free. Macalester students who present a valid Mac ID at the door will be admitted free courtesy of Macalester Athletics.
