Men’s Soccer: Scots Fall to Carleton in MIAC Playoffs

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 4-2 loss to Carleton College in the quarterfinals of the MIAC Playoffs Tuesday at Carleton's Bell Field. The Scots complete the year with a 7-6-4 record overall, while the Knights (11-6-1) advance to Thursday's semifinals at St. Olaf.

Macalester struck first, with senior forward Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) heading home a cross from senior midfielder Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) in the 21st minute. Just 40 seconds later, Frantz received a pass from Blattman on the left side, dribbled in and lifted a shot into the goal from the top left corner of the penalty area for a 2-0 lead.

Carleton's comeback started with a goal by Josh Zebrack in the 53rd minute. After Oscar Gates tied the score in the 63rd minute, the game remained tied late into the second half. In the 88th minute, Willan Shrock placed a shot into the top left corner of the goal for the go-ahead goal. Shrock notched an insurance goal in the 90th minute to close out the scoring.

The Knights held a 19-12 edge in shots taken, putting 10 on frame for the match compared to four for Macalester. Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Ratner (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) made six saves for the Scots, while Adam Ouachani had two saves for Carleton.

The game marked the final contest for nine Macalester seniors: Blattman, Frantz, Joey Burica (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata), Jack Freimann (Denver, Colo./Northfield), Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield), Drew Moseman (St. Paul, Minn./Central), Michael Myers (San Rafael, Calif./Marin Catholic), PJ Pozniak (Phoenixville, Pa./Spring-Ford), and Charles Wriedt (St. Paul, Minn./Central).
