MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team concluded the 2017 season with a 6-3 victory over Hamline University in a MIAC dual Sunday afternoon at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Scots end the year 8-9 overall and 4-5 in conference play, while the Pipers drop to 7-11, 2-7 MIAC.

Macalester earned one point in doubles play with a win by junior Josh Doyle (Cologne, Germany/Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium) and sophomore Matthew Yang (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) at No. 1 doubles. Doyle and Yang also picked up straight-set victories at first and fifth singles, respectively, as the Scots won five of the six singles matches. Junior Aidan Tirpack (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais), sophomore Peter Willenborg (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) and junior Ben Wilson (Oakland, Calif./College Preparatory School) also won at second, fourth and sixth singles.

Macalester finished tied for fifth in the MIAC standings with Saint John's, but a loss to the Johnnies earlier this season gives Saint John's the fifth and final spot in the MIAC playoffs.

The dual also marked the final matches for senior Hardt Bergmann (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi).
