MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team concluded the 2017 season with a 6-3 victory over Hamline University in a MIAC dual Sunday afternoon at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Scots end the year 8-9 overall and 4-5 in conference play, while the Pipers drop to 7-11, 2-7 MIAC.
Macalester earned one point in doubles play with a win by junior
Josh Doyle (Cologne, Germany/Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium) and sophomore
Matthew Yang (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) at No. 1 doubles. Doyle and Yang also picked up straight-set victories at first and fifth singles, respectively, as the Scots won five of the six singles matches. Junior
Aidan Tirpack (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais), sophomore
Peter Willenborg (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) and junior
Ben Wilson (Oakland, Calif./College Preparatory School) also won at second, fourth and sixth singles.
Macalester finished tied for fifth in the MIAC standings with Saint John's, but a loss to the Johnnies earlier this season gives Saint John's the fifth and final spot in the MIAC playoffs.
The dual also marked the final matches for senior
