ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team opened the 2017 spring season with a 9-0 triumph over Martin Luther College in a non-conference dual Saturday in the Leonard Center.

Senior Hardt Bergmann (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) and junior Aidan Tirpack (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) started things off with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Juniors Travis Beach (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and Ben Wilson (Oakland, Calif./College Preparatory School) also notched an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, with sophomores Peter Willenborg (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) and Matthew Yang (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) winning at No. 3 doubles, 8-0.

Tirpack played at first singles and won in straight sets over Justin Marshall, 6-0, 6-1. Bergmann, Yang, Willenborg, Wilson and first year Michael Lockhart (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) also won in straight sets in their singles matches.

Macalester hosts another non-conference dual on Saturday, Feb. 11 against Ripon College in the Leonard Center.
