ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team participated in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships and the Midwest Open, both at Gustavus Adolphus on Friday through Monday.
At the ITA Midwest Regional, senior
Josh Doyle (Cologne, Germany/Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium) was the No. 8 seed and won three matches to advance to the quarterfinals. He ultimately fell to Gustavus' Yassine Derbani in straight sets. Senior
Aidan Tirpack (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) defeated Jacob Logan of Central in a first-round match before losing in the second round. Junior
Matthew Yang (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and first years
Sam Hochberger (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and
Ben White (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) also played in the regional singles tournament.
In doubles, Doyle and Hochberger advanced to the third round with wins over teams from Luther and Saint John's. Tirpack and White played together in the doubles draw, losing in the first round.
At the Midwest Open, senior
Ben Wilson (Oakland, Calif./College Preparatory School) won twice to advance to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual-champion Grant Mauthe of UW-Eau Claire. Sophomore
Michael Lockhart (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) also won a match in the singles bracket. In the doubles bracket, the tandems of Lockhart and first year
Aidan Toner-Rodgers (Sebastopol, Calif./Analy), and senior
Travis Beach (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and sophomore
Allessandro Mauceri (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz Central) each won their first-round matches.
