ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College football team piled up 541 yards of total offense while allowing no points on defense in a 34-0 victory over visiting Grinnell College Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Midwest Conference win gives the Scots (3-1) a 2-0 record in the league, while the Pioneers (0-3) are 0-2 in the MWC.
Macalester opened the scoring on its second drive of the game that started at the Grinnell 25 yard line. A 25-yard pass to junior running back
Jacob Jones (Hanceville, Ala./Holly Pond) set up a 5-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback
Cody Petrich (Lansing, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) to sophomore receiver
Alec Beatty (Topeka, Kan./Topeka) for a 7-0 Scots' lead. Beatty also scored on a seven-yard pass from Petrich early in the second quarter. Beatty now has seven touchdowns in four games this season.
The highlight of the day came on Macalester's next possession following Beatty's second touchdown. Sophomore running back
Jeremy Stephan (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) ran up the middle and appeared to be stopped before emerging from the pile and scampering 64 yards for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead. Stephan also scored Macalester's next touchdown on a seven-yard run in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, a pair of first years connected for the Scots' final touchdown, with quarterback
Johnny Bice (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) hitting receiver
Reese Bresson (Homosassel, Fla./Crystal River) for a 33-yard touchdown.
Petrich threw for 298 yards and two touchdowns on 19-of-30 passing in his second collegiate start. Stephan ended up with 94 yards rushing on just six carries, while Jones had 40 yards on 12 carries. Senior receiver
Garrett Eichhorn (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) caught four passes for 133 yards, a 33.3-yard average. Senior receiver
Tre Nowaczynski (Hales Corners, Wis./West Allis Central) had five receptions for 33 yards.
The defense, which held Grinnell to 252 yards of total offense and no points, was led by linebackers
Glen Hartford (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) and
Phil Wettersten (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury), who had seven tackles apiece. Senior defensive lineman
Nick Egersdorf (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) had two sacks.
For the Pioneers, Carson Dunn had 103 yards on 30 rushing attempts, and quarterback Tony Bergida threw for 125 yards.
Macalester goes on the road on Saturday, Oct. 1 for a Midwest Conference game at Ripon. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Ripon, Wis.
