Baseball: No. 5 St. Thomas Takes Two from Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team lost twice to fifth-ranked University of St. Thomas in a MIAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Koch Diamond. The Scots fall to 12-10 overall and 2-8 in the conference, while the Tommies improve to 17-3, 10-0 MIAC.

Macalester struck first in Game 1, as sophomore Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) followed a single by sophomore Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) with a triple in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead. That is all the Scots could muster off St. Thomas hurler Eric Veglahn, who gave up one run on four hits while fanning four in seven innings. The Tommies took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the second inning en route to an 11-1 victory. Senior Nick Sia (Crofton, Md./South River) and junior Quentin Stuart (Nashville, Ind./Indiana Academy) had Macalester's other hits.

St. Thomas controlled Game 2 from the start, scoring six runs over the first two innings to cruise to a 21-3 win. Sia had a run-scoring single in the fourth, while senior Sam Berk (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) and first year Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Wootton) drove in runs in the sixth for the Scots. Berk finished with two hits and two runs.

Macalester hosts the University of Northwestern on Monday, Apr. 18 in a non-conference game. The first pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
