ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team lost a non-conference game to the University of Northwestern, 5-3 Monday afternoon at Nicholson Field. The Scots are now 12-11 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 12-14.
Northwestern took an early lead with two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Macalester responded in the bottom of the second, as senior
Nick Sia (Crofton, Md./South River) singled home junior
Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), and a grounder by sophomore
Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) plated sophomore
Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) to tie the score at 2-2.
In the top of the fifth, Ryan Sutterer hit a two-run double, then later scored on a bases-loaded walk to put the Eagles ahead, 5-2. The Scots loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth, and sophomore
Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) hit an infield single that scored senior
Jonathan Melms (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) to make the score 5-3. But pitcher Daniel Stratton, who came on in relief, struck out the next two batters and induced a groundout to end the threat.
Macalester put two runners on base in the ninth, with first year
Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Wootton) and Melms leading off the inning with singles. The next two batters grounded out, and reliever Nathan Ehnstrom got the final batter to line out to second base end the game.
Senior
Griffen Gallagher (Westport, Conn./IMG Pendleton Academies) started and allowed five runs on six hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings. Junior
Jamie Progebin (Washington, D.C./Maret) and sophomore
Doug Lewis (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) each pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Castagnetti finished the day with three hits and a run.
The Scots will take on MIAC foe Gustavus Adolphus on Wednesday, Apr. 20 in a doubleheader in St. Peter, Minn. The first game is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
