TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team took two from UW-Superior in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the Tucson Invitational, held at the Kino Sports Complex. The Scots won by scores of 9-6 and 9-7 to improve to 6-1 on the season, while the Yellowjackets are now 1-7.
In the first game, Macalester trailed 4-1 heading to the bottom of the third. Five singles, a walk, a hit batsman and a sacrifice fly allowed the Scots to push six runs across for a 7-4 advantage. Sophomore
Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) and junior
Peter Bertel (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) each delivered two-run singles, while sophomore
Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) and sophomore
Greg Suber (Delaware, Ohio/Rutherford B. Hayes) also drove in runs. Bertel's grounder plated first year
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) in the fourth, and a triple by first year
Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) scored junior
Alex Dash (New York, N.Y./Columbia Grammar & Prep) in the fifth for a 9-4 lead.
UW-Superior scored twice in the top of the seventh and had runners at second and third, but sophomore pitcher
Sean O'Brien (Potomac, Md./Landon School) induced a groundout to end the game. Junior
Joseph Aulisi (McLean, Va./Langley) started and allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits while striking out three and walking one in six innings of work for his first win of the season. Abelson, Brantner, McMullen and Dash had two hits apiece for the Scots.
The second game started in similar fashion as the first, with the Scots falling behind, 3-1 after two innings. In the top of fourth, senior
Nick Sia (Crofton, Md./South River) delivered a two-run single before McMullen blasted a three-run homer, his first of the season, for a 6-3 lead. After the Yellowjackets scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, Sia plated first year
Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) with a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make the score 7-4.
Macalester answered a UW-Superior run in the fifth with two runs in the top of the sixth on a RBI single from Goldberg and a sacrifice fly by junior
Quentin Stuart (Mashville, Ind./Indiana Academy). Again the Yellowjackets threatened late, getting a two-run triple from Chad Patko in the bottom of the seventh. But the Scots closed out their fifth consecutive win in Arizona, stranding Patko at third.
Sophomore
Doug Lewis (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) came on in relief of junior
Dylan Edwards-Gaherty (New York, N.Y./American Studies), pitching four innings and allowing three runs on six hits to earn the win. Abelson and Goldberg delivered three hits apiece, while McMullen, senior
Jonathan Melms (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and sophomore
Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) had two hits each. Macalester racked up 24 hits and scored 18 runs in the sweep.
The Scots take on the University of Wesleyan on Friday, Mar. 18, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Kino Sports Complex.
