Baseball: Loss to Wesleyan Ends Macalester’s Winning Streak at Six

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team fell to Wesleyan University, 5-1 Friday evening at the Kino Sports Complex. The loss ends a six-game winning streak for the Scots, who are now 6-2 on the season. The Cardinals improve to 9-3.

Macalester got on the scoreboard first, with senior Nick Sia (Crofton, Md./South River) coming home on an error in the first inning. Wesleyan answered with two unearned runs in the bottom of the first and added another run in the fourth for a 3-1 lead. Then in the sixth, Guy Davidson hit a run-scoring single, and Marco Baratta drew a bases-loaded walk to make the score 5-1. The Scots put runners in scoring position in five innings but could not come up with the key hit, losing for the first time since their season-opening game on Mar. 12.

Junior left-hander Sam Thomas (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill) started and allowed five runs, two earned, on nine hits while striking out five in 5 2/3 innings. Junior Brendan O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits. Wesleyan's Ethan Rode earned his second victory of the season after going 6 1/3 innings and allowing one unearned run.

Macalester closes out its Arizona trip with a doubleheader against Caltech on Saturday, Mar. 19. The first game starts at 2:00 p.m. at the Kino Sports Complex.
