TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team swept a doubleheader from Caltech, 8-6 and 9-3 on Saturday at the Kino Sports Complex. The wins mark the end of the Spring Break trip to Arizona for the Scots, who head north with an 8-2 record. The Beavers fall to 2-13.
In the first game, Caltech scored three unearned runs in the first inning and added a fourth run in the second for a 4-0 advantage. Macalester responded in the bottom of the second with four runs to tie the score at 4-4. Senior
Jonathan Melms (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) drew a bases-loaded walk, senior
Nick Sia (Crofton, Md./South River) hit a two-run single and first year
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) drove in a run in the inning. The Beavers regained the lead with a run in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Sia and senior
Phillip Stuhr (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) plated runs, and sophomore
Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) hit a two-run single to put the Scots on top, 8-5. Caltech scored a run in the sixth, but sophomore
Joe Trier (Madison, Wis./West) closed the door, recording the final four outs to close out the win.
First year
Cole Chang (Pleasantville, N.Y./Collegiate School) improved to 2-0 on the season, allowing six runs, two earned, while striking out three and walking one in 5 2/3 innings.
Macalester started the second game with two runs in the top of the first, only to have the Beavers answer with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. The Scots broke the game open in the top of the second inning, as first year

Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) brought home two runs with a ground-rule double for a 6-2 lead. Sophomore
Chance Carnahan (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) singled home sophomore
Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) in the third, and Castagnetti and sophomore
Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) drove in runs in the fourth.
Senior right-hander
Griffen Gallagher (Westport, Conn./IMG Pendleton Academies) pitched five strong innings, allowing three runs on eight hits to earn the win. Junior
Jamie Progebin (Washington, D.C./Maret) tossed two scoreless innings of relief. Offensively, Castagnetti and Brantner each delivered three hits in the win.
Macalester hosts UW-Superior on Wednesday, Mar. 30 in the Scots' home opener. The first game of the non-conference doubleheader starts at 2:30 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
