LAKEVILLE, Minn. -- The Macalester College men's tennis team took on the College of St. Scholastica in Monday night action at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville. The Scots came away with a 6-3 victory over the Saints to improve their season record to 2-1 and force St. Scholastica to fall to 1-3 overall.
Macalester was able to win four of the six single matches and two in doubles play. Both teams battled, represented by four of the six singles matches being decided by a third set super-tiebreaker. The Scots were victorious at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 4, and No. 6 singles spots and both the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches.
Macalester's top singles player,
Josh Doyle (Cologne, Germany) earned two wins on the day, first in singles defeating Josh Stainer, 7-6 and 6-4 and then again in doubles with partner,
Brian Utz (Rochester, Minn./ Lourdes). Utz was also a double-winner, defeating his singles opponent at No. 2, 6-1 and 7-5.
Wilson Merrell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) was the third Macalester player to win in both singles and doubles. Merrell defeated Mike Fontana at No. 4 singles in an exciting battle, 4-6, 6-2, (15-13). He partnered with
Aidan Tirpack (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) to earn a victory at No. 2 doubles, 8-4.
Macalester will return to action on Friday, Feb. 26 when they travel to Eau Claire, Wis. to take on UW-Eau Claire at 6 p.m.
