ROCHESTER, Minn. -- The Macalester College men's tennis team took on  #13 regionally-ranked UW- La Crosse Friday evening at the Rochester Tennis Connection. The Scots came away with a huge win, defeating the Eagles 5-4 after winning three singles matches and two doubles. The Scots improve to 1-1 this season as La Crosse falls to 1-5.

Macalester earned key wins in doubles action when Josh Doyle (Cologne, Germany) and Brian Utz (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) won at #1 doubles 9-7. The duo of Matthew Yang (Bethesda, Md./Walt  Whitman) and Hardt Bergmann (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) took the win at #3 doubles in a 9-8 battle.

In singles action, the Scots earned wins at the #2 through #4 spots with Utz picking up his second win of the day. Aidan Tirpack (Mill Valley, Calif.) was victorious at no. 3 singles winning set one 6-2, falling in set two 0-6 and came back to win a 10-3 tiebreaker. Willson Merrell (Poughkeepsie, NY (Arlington) picked up the third singles win at no. 4, winning 6-2 and 6-4.

Macalester will return to action on Monday, Feb. 22 as they travel to Lakeville, Minn. to take on St. Scholastica. Match play will begin at 5 p.m. at Lifetime Fitness.
