Football: Macalester Falls to Lake Forest, 35-14

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College football team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end with a 35-14 loss to Lake Forest in a Midwest Conference game Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Scots are now 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the Foresters improve to 5-2, 3-2 MWC.

Lake Forest struck first with a 57-yard touchdown run by Joey Valdivia midway through the first quarter. The Foresters made it 14-0 with 8:17 to play in the second quarter on a five-yard touchdown pass from Jagan Cleary to Alex Pasiewicz. On the Scots' next possession, Macalester put together a nine-play, 70-yard scoring drive ending in a 28-yard touchdown pass from junior running back Matthew Bonazzoli (Swampscott, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) to senior receiver Garrett Eichhorn (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman). Lake Forest closed out the half with Valdivia's second touchdown of the day, a 12-yard run that made the score 21-7 at the half.

After forcing a Lake Forest punt to start the second half, the Scots drove 77 yards on 14 plays to cut the deficit to 21-14. Sophomore receiver Jonathan Knee (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) caught four passes for 44 yards in the drive, and first year receiver Reese Bresson (Homosassel, Fla./Crystal River) ran it in from three yards out.

Macalester's defense tightened up in the third quarter, as the Foresters punted on their first three possessions after halftime. On Lake Forest's fourth possession, back-to-back sacks by senior defensive lineman Nick Egersdorf (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) resulted in a turnover on downs with 11 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Scots moved the ball to the Lake Forest 37 yard line, but a person foul and a fumble stalled the drive, which ended in a punt.

With the Foresters on their own 26 yard line with third down and three and the Scots looking to get the ball back, Valdivia blasted through the line and rumbled 74 yards for the touchdown and a 28-14 lead. Macalester was picked off near midfield on its ensuing possession, and Valdivia ran 44 yards for a touchdown on the first play to put the game out of reach.

Junior quarterback Christian Adams (Alexandria, La./Pineville) was 26-of-52 for 277 yards and three interceptions, while Eichhorn finished with seven catches for 102 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Alec Beatty (Topeka, Kan./Topeka) also caught seven passes for 68 yards. Along with his touchdown pass, Bonazzoli added 30 yards on eight rushes. On defense, junior defensive back Cash McGregor (Wasilla, Alaska/Wasilla) led the way with nine tackles, while senior linebacker Glen Hartford (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) had an interception to go with four tackles. Egersdorf's performance gives him 10.5 sacks on the season.

Valdivia, who entered the game ranked first nationally in rushing touchdowns and fifth in rushing yards, ended up with 278 yards and four touchdowns on 30 carries. Cleary threw for 186 yards and one touchdown.

Macalester continues Midwest Conference play with a home game against Lake Forest on Saturday, Oct. 15. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
