ROSEVILLE, Minn. -- Macalester came from behind in game one only to see the effort go for naught but the Scots jumped out to an early lead in the night cap and never looked back, splitting a doubleheader with Northwestern, losing 5-4 before before claiming an 11-3 win.
The first game of the twin bill saw the hosts take a 4-0 lead after three innings before the Scots began their comeback in the fifth.
Jonathan Melms singled to lead off the inning and scored one out later when
Alex Baretta doubled to left-center field.
Tom Forster then cut the lead to one run with his third home run of the season.
Griffen Gallagher shut the door on the Eagles in the fourth and fifth innings and, in the top of the sixth,
Ben Castagnetti doubled to bring home
Nick Sia with the game-tying run but the hosts got the game-winning run on a walk, a stolen base and a base hit up the middle.
Game two was a different affair as the Scots scored three times in each of the first two innings and
Joe Trier scattered five hits over six innings of work as Macalester cruised to an eight-run victory.
Tom Forster's two-run double in the first began the Macalester scoring and he came home to score when he and
Nick McMullen executed a double steal. Forster would also add an RBI double in the second while
Sam Berk drove in two runs with sacrifice flies in the second and fourth innings.
Peter Bertel hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fith, and
Scott Foltz and
Ben Castagnetti drove in single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively to finish the Scots' scoring.
Trier picked up his first career win by allowing just one run on five hits and two walks in six innings of work. He struck out three in his longest outing of the season.
In addition to Forster's two doubles, McMullen and
Nick Mar both added a pair of hits.
Macalester returns to action, Thursday, when they close out the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference portion of the 2015 scheduled with a 4 p.m. doubleheader versus Augsburg at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis.
