Baseball: Macalester sweeps North Central with pair of shutout wins

Scots pitching leads way in twin bill victories.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Macalester's pitchers allowed just five hits in each game and the Scots took both games of a doubleheader from North Central by identical, 7-0, scores.

Sean O'Brien, Joseph Aulisi and Forest Redlin combined on the five-hit shutout in game one while Paul Schubring tossed his first career complete game in game two to lead the way.

The Scots used a four-run third inning in the opener to break the game open, an inning highlighted by Greg Suber's first career home run. Meanwhile, Nick McMullen and Phillip Stuhr each had two hits with a run scored and an RBI.

O'Brien worked the first two innings, allowing two hits and a walk with three strikeouts and was credited with his third win of the season. Aulisi followed with two innings of work and allowed just a hit with three strikeouts. Redlin then finished up, allowing two hits with one strikeout over the final three innings to earn his second save of the season.

In the night cap, Schubring scattered five hits and four walks while striking out a careeer-high eight batters to earn his first win of the season.

Similar to game one, the Scots posted five runs in the third inning to break the game open. Scott Foltz singled home a pair of runs in the inning while Alex Baretta led the Macalester offense by hitting a pair of doubles while scoring two runs.

Macalester is back in action Tuesday for another non-conference doubleheader as the Scots are at Northwestern in Roseville, Minn. The opening game of the twin bill is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
