ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Brendan O'Connor pitched eight scoreless innings in game two and, after a game-one comeback had fallen short, his effort enabled Macalester to garner its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the season as the Scots split their doubleheader with Gustavus Adolphus.
The Gusties took a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning of game one before Macalester got on the scoreboard. A
Scott Foltz one-out single began a two-run rally.
Jonathan Melms followed with an infield single and the pair advanced on
Nick Mar's groundout. A walk to
Tom Forster loaded the bases and
Sam Berk singled up the middle to plate both Foltz and Melms.
Gustavus Adolphus responded by getting the two runs back in the top of the fourth but, a pair of long balls in the fifth inning would get the home team back in the game.
Melms' one-out single preced
Nick Mar's fifth home run of the season and, after Berk walked, one out later,
Quentin Stuart hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season to cut the Gusties' lead to 7-6.
The Gusties would bring on Christopher Kelly to pitch the sixth and seventh innings and he managed to halt the Scots' rally, allowing just one hit while striking out three over the final two innings to wrap up the 7-6 win.
Running short on pitching as they headed into their sixth game in four days, the Scots turned to O'Connor in game two.
The team's top reliever, O'Connor had made 10 appearances out of the bullpen was making his first start of the season and he spun a game, allowing just five hits and two walks over eight innings, striking out six while getting 13 hits in support.
The Scots scored three times in the third inning with Berk once again stroking a two-run single to highlight the inning. Macalester then followed with single runs in the next four innings to put the game out of reach and, after O'Connor threw 109 pitches in eight inning,
Sean O'Brien came on to pitch a scoreless ninth to close out the victory.
The Scots' 13-hit attack, which featured six doubles, was led by a three-hit performance by
Collin Brantner, who doubled twice. Mar, Berk,
Alex Baretta and
Ben Castagnetti each had two hits.
Another six-game week is on tap for Macalester next, beginning Monday with a 2:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader versus North Central at Nicholson Field.
