Men's Tennis: Tightly-contested match sees St. Thomas down Macalester

Scots drops 5-4 decision to Tommies in regular-season finale.

Josh Doyle
LAKEVILLE, Minn. -- St. Thomas won two of the three doubles matches and held on by splitting the six singles matches to claim a 5-4 win over Macalester in the Scots' regular-season finale.

Three of the six singles matches saw sets go to tie breakers with one going to a super tie breaker.

In doubles play, Josh Doyle and Wilson Merrell won their fifth consecutive match at two doubles, 9-7, but Tommie victories at one and three doubles would eventually prove to be the difference.

Singles competition saw Doyle continue his winning ways, winning his sixth consecutive match and 11th in his last 12, as he earned a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) win at one singles.

Brian Utz followed that with the most dominant singles win of the night, a 6-2, 6-1 victory at second singles.

The Tommies would win at three, four and five singles to put the match away and Perry Campbell's 1-6, 6-4, 10-3 win at six singles proved anti-climatic.

The Scots will now await their playoff fate as a St. John's win, Sunday, over conference co-lead Carleton, would create a three-way tie for the fifth and final spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs. Currently, the Macalester is tied with St. Mary's at 4-5 but holds the head-to-head advantage over the Cardinals. A St. John's loss would give the Scots their first playoff berth since the conference went to a playoff system.

The MIAC playoffs begin Tuesday with the number five seed scheduled to play at the number four seed. Thursday the first and second seeds will hosts the third and fourth/fifth seed with the highest remaining seed hosting the conference championship next Saturday.
