MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Macalester won five of six singles matches to wrap up a 7-2 win over Hamline and all but secure the fifth seed in next week's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs.
The Scots are now 4-4 in conference play with one match versus third-place St. Thomas remaining. Saint Mary's which is 4-5, is finished with its conference schedule and, with Macalester's 5-4 win over the Cardinals earlier this season, the Scots hold the tie-breaker advantage.
Saint John's is the only team which can surpass Macalester but, to do so, they will need to defeat both first-place Carleton and second-place Gustavus Adolphus later this week to do so.
The Scots started the night off with wins at two and three doubles to take a 2-1 lead.
Josh Doyle and
Wilson Merrell were 8-5 winners at two doubles and San Naden and
Perry Campbell were 9-8 (7-5) winners at three doubles.
Doyle also won at one singles, 6-1, 6-1, and
Brian Utz was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at two singles.
Macalester wrapped up the victory with wins at four, five and six singles as Naden won 7-5, 6-2 at four singles, Merrell won 6-4, 7-5 at five singles and Campbell was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at six singles.
The Scots are slated to wrap up the regular season, Friday, by hosting St. Thomas in a 4:30 p.m. match at the Hayden Courts.
