ST. MARY'S -- Macalester led in game one until four unearned runs in the sixth brought down the Scots and Saint Mary's put up multiple-run innings four times in game two and the Cardinals left Nicholson Field with a 7-5, 16-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep.
Macalester grabbed the initial lead in game one when
Nick Mar led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run but the visitors rebounded with two runs in the second.
The Scots got those runs back in the third when
Alex Baretta walked,
Tom Forster doubled and
Sam Berk drove the pair home with a single.
Saint Mary's tied the game in the top of the fourth but Macalester got solo home runs from
Collin Brantner leading off the bottom of the fourth and with two out in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
Defensive lapses then proved costly in the sixth as a pair of errors led to four unearned runs and the first loss of the season for relief pitcher
Brendan O'Connor.
Berk, Brantner and
Nick Sia each had a pair of hits for the Scots, who outhit the Cardinals, 10-7, but saw their three errors lead to five unearned runs in the game.
Game two saw six Scot pitchers allow 30 base runners, which included 22 Saint Mary's hits, and the hosts were unable to keep pace.
Mar, Forster and Brantner each had two hits in game two with Forster and Baretta collecting doubles in the contest.
Macalester is scheduled to return to action, Tuesday, with a 2:30 p.m. MIAC doubleheader at St. John's.
