SARTELL, Minn. --Â St. John's won two of three doubles matches and won two singles matches in super tie breakers, enabling the Johnnies to defeat Macalester, 5-4, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match the the Fitness Evolution Tennis Center.
The Scots earned a tie-break victory at number one doubles as
Aidan Tirpack and
Brian Utz scored a 9-8 (7-5) win but St. John's won at two and three doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
Macalester gots three singles wins with
Josh Doyle extending his winning streak to six matches with a 6-2, 6-4 win at two singles.
Aidan Tirpack won for the six time in his last seven matches with a 6-3, 6-1 win at three singles and
Perry Campbell, at six singles, won his third consecutive match with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory.
The match turned at four and five singles where
Wilson Merrell, at four, and
Sam Naden, took their matches to super tie breaks but both were bested and St. John's was able to escape with the 5-4 win.
Macalester is idle this week before returning to play, April 11, when the Scots travel north on Snelling Avenue to meet Hamline in a 4:30 p.m. match.
