HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Macalester lost just seven games in three doubles matches and used that momentum to claim all six singles matches in posting its second consecutive 9-0 win of Hilton Head Spring Tennis Festival, defeating Messiah.
Brian Utz and
Carl Bergmann led off at number one doubles with an 8-3 with
Josh Doyle and
Wilson Merrell, at two doubles, and
Aidan Tirpack and
Sam Naden, at three doubles, posting 8-2 wins.
Utz then won his one singles match, 6-4, 6-2, with Doyle claiming a 6-1, 6-3 win at two doubles and Tirpack was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at three singles.
Merrell had the closest match of the day, pulling out a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win at four singles. Naden was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at five singles, posting the best record of the day for the Scots at 20-2, while
Perry Campbell's only appearance of the day turned into a 6-1, 6-2 win at six singles.
In a shuffling of scheduled matches due to predicted rain for Thursday, Macalester will face Allegheny tonigh at 6 p.m. at the Evian Tennis Center.
