Men's Tennis: Macalester falters in MIAC opener

St. Olaf hands Scots a 6-3 loss to begin conference slate.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Josh Doyle teammed with Wilson Merrell for Macalester's lone doubles win and battled to a super tiebreaker in his number two singles match as Macalester dropped a 6-3 decision to St. Olaf in both teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.

Doyle and Merrell won their number two doubles match, 8-3, but suffered singles losses. Doyle, after losing a first set tiebreaker, cruised to a 6-1 win the second set before an 11-9 loss in the super tiebreaker. Merrell lost at four singles, 6-0, 6-1.

Brian Utz and Aidan Tirpack dropped the number doubles match, to the eighth-ranked team in the region of Stephan Nolan and Joey Kronzer, 8-1, while Sam Naden and Carl Bergmann dropped at 8-4 decision at three doubles.

Utz rebounded against Nolan at number one singles with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win and Tirpack won 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 at three singles to account for the Scots' final two victories on the evening.

Naden, at five singles, dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision while Perry Campbell suffered a 6-2, 6-2 loss at six singles.

The Scots are now idle until they begin a four-day run of matches in Hilton Head, S.C., March 16. Macalester opens its spring break trip by facing Greenville College.
