SARTELL, Minn. -- Macalester dropped a pair of matches to UW-Eau Claire and NCAA Division II St. Cloud State, both of which are ranked regionally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, at the Revolution Fitness Tennis Center.
In their most competitive match of the young season, the Scots dropped a 6-3 decision to UWEC before falling 9-0 to SCSU.
Macalester trailed the Blugolds, 2-1, after doubles play as
Josh Doyle and
Wilson Merrell garnered an 8-6 win over Will Weyenberg and Andrew Rust at number two doubles.
Doyle and
Brian Utz then led off singles play with a pair of wins as Utz, at one singles, needed to go to a super tiebreaker after winning the opening set versus Kyle Hoffmann, 6-3, before dropping the second set, 6-2. He then dominated the tiebreaker, winning 10-2 to claim the victory.
Doyle faced Weyenberg at two singles and cruised to a 6-1 win in the opening set before battling to a 7-5 victory in the second.
Macalester did not go quietly in the loss to the Huskies. Doyle and Merrell took their two doubles match to a tie-breaker in a 9-8 loss while Utz and
Aidan Tirpack, at one doubles, and
Sam Naden and
Perry Campbell, at three doubles, both dropped 8-6 decisions.
In singles play, Doyle took Joao Poli to a super tiebreak after the duo split a pair of 6-4 decisions in the first two sets. Utz, at one singles, dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decisions while Naden, at five singles, was defeated 6-3, 6-2.
The Scots have one match on the slate next weekend as they will host Minnesota-Morris in a 4 p.m. match at the Leonard Center.
