HOW IT HAPPENED•
Charlie Spurr got the Scots on the scoreboard in the game's 58th minute, his third goal of the season, with
Alan Schembri-Wismayer picking up his league-leading 10th assist of the season.
• Wilson Merrell, in just the fourth game of his junior season, notched his first career goal with seven minutes, 30 seconds to play in the game, just 10 minutes after he entered the contest, by converting a Jake Burke rebound.NOTES• Knowing the team had the fifth seed in the MIAC playoffs locked up before the game started, head coach
Gregg Olson used 22 field players, giving many of his regulars additional rest before Tuesday's MIAC quarterfinal game.
• Mark McRae-Hokenson, starting and making his first varsity appearance on Senior Night, saw nine minutes of action and recorded a shot on goal.
• The team's four seniors, McRae-Hokenson, Cole Erickson, Will Matsuda and Jordan Ped all started in their final regular-season home game at Macalester Stadium.
• The Scots head into the playoffs on a five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1).HEAD COACH GREGG OLSON'S COMMENTS• On managing the game knowing the team was locked into fifth place in the league standings "
As soon as the playoff seeding was set before our kickoff, and the players knew we were the fifth seed, win or lose, tonight was going to be a difficult game to manage on the psychological side. It is hard to get up for a game that you know doesn't have ramifications on your season."
• About the first half: "
In the first half we struggled to find our way into the game and St. Mary's played very well. Once we regrouped at halftime, and reframed what the half meant to us, we began to play and create some chances."• Discussing
Charlie Spurr's goal: "
Charlie finally got the goal he's been deserving of for a long time now. Hopefully that propels him to continue to get himself into good places and frame the goal."• On
Wilson Merrell's goal: "
The second goal was a product of a great shot by Jake Burke. He beat a defender and struck a really nice ball on target. After the Saint Mary's goalkeeper made the save, Wilson followed it up and scored his first collegiate goal. The team exploded on the sidelines! It was priceless to see the reaction from the entire program in support of their teammates."UP NEXT• In the MIAC playoffs for the first time since 2010, Macalester will be on the road, Tuesday, for an 11:30 a.m. game at fourth-seeded St. John's. It will be the Scots' second trip to Collegeville, Minn., this season, having dropped a 2-1 decision to the Johnnies in the teams' first meeting this season, Sept. 30.
