HOW IT HAPPENED• Rocky Harmon got off a seemingly harmless shot from outside the penalty box, but the ball rolled through and past a screened and diving
Zeke Vainer for a 1-0 St. John's lead, just 11 minutes, 33 seconds into the game.
• Harmon scored again, at 58:06, when he got to a loose ball in the penalty box and quickly fired a shot, which curved inside the right goal post, giving the Johnnies a 2-0 lead. Despite the fact that the teams were tied in shot attempts at the time, 5-5, St. John's had a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.
NOTES• This was Macalester's first MIAC playoff appearance since 2010, when the Scots also suffered a two-goal defeat in the first round, falling 3-1 to Concordia, Nov. 1, 2010.
• The two goals against marked the first time since the Scots' 2-1 regular-season loss, Sept. 30, at St. John's in which they had allowed more than one goal, having limited opponents to three goals over six games between the two losses.
•
Colby King led Macalester with two shots in the game, matching his season total going into the game.
HEAD COACH GREGG OLSON'S COMMENTS"The day concludes with mixed emotions. We played some really good soccer this morning and won battles all over the field against a very good St. John's team. But, in the end we, had two poor lapses that resulted in both of their goals. For our program to compete at the elite level, we have to grow up and compete in each moment. You can't have breakdowns like we did today."
"The bright side of the day will become more apparent as we have time to step away and reflect on the season. We are young and we knew there would be a few key mistakes this season. However, our style of play, quality on the ball, and culture of the program made huge strides since August. There is no question that we still have areas to correct and individually we need to gain maturity. But now, with some post season experience, a year of development, and another class of recruits, the stage has been set for future success within the program."
THAT'S A WRAP• Macalester concludes its 2014 season with an 11-6-2 record, its best season and first winning record in
Gregg Olson's three-year tenure as head coach.
