Scots drop MIAC opener to Carleton

Macalester vs. Carleton box score

Macalester won at first singles, but MIAC stronghold Carleton went on to gain an 8-1 victory at Lakeville's Lifetime Fitness Club Sunday afternoon in the conference opener for the Scots.

Brian Utz (Fy., Rochester, Minn. / Lourdes) accounted for Mac's victory, gaining a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 triumph at No. 1 singles over Carleton's Austin Jiang, a three-time all-conference performer, for his third straight victory on the season.

Mac's closest loss came at No. 2 doubles, where Stephen Tyndel (Sr., Toronto, Ont. / City Academy) and Max Soghikian (Jr., Piedmont, Calif.) dropped a hard-fought 9-7 decision.

Carleton, last year's MIAC runner-up, improves to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

The Scots, 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the MIAC, return to the court Saturday (March 2) in St. Peter with a pair of matches against Grinnell (Ia.) and MIAC champ Gustavus.
