Macalester went 2-2 to finish fourth while hosting the Collegiate Water Polo Association (WCPA) Division III conference tournament Friday and Saturday at the Leonard Center Riley Pool. The Scots upset No. 1-seeded Carthage (Wis.) in the second round, scoring late to win 11-10. They also collected a victory over Penn State-Behrend.
GAME 1 RECAP - The Scots avenged a one-goal defeat to Penn State-Behrend in mid-March by defeating the Lions 9-3 in the first of 15 CWPA tournament games this weekend at the Riley Pool. Macalester led 4-1 at the halftime intermission and was on top by a comfortable 7-2 margin after three quarters.
Macalester goalkeeper Chloe Kaulus (Fy., Chicago, Ill. / Latin School) turned away nine shots on goal, while the Scots were successful on nine of their 11 total shots on net.
Katie Eulau (Fy., Saratoga, Calif. / Castilleja) scored five of Mac's nine goals.
Phoebe Marcus (Fy., Carmel, Calif.) netted a pair of goals, and adding one goal each were
Grace Fleming (Jr., Northampton, Mass.) and
Rachel Harrington-Abrams (Fy., Berkeley, Calif.).
Macalester's second game today is against No. 1-seeded Carthage (Wis.) at 2 p.m.
GAME 2 RECAP - Carthage came in seeded first after posting a perfect 10-0 conference record during the regular-season. Mac is seeded ninth after a 1-9 campaign.
However, using their momentum from the win over Penn State-Behrend, the Scots used great goalkeeping from Kaulus, who turned away 12 shots on net, to go up 6-2 in the second quarter, 6-3 at halftime and 8-6 after three periods.
Carthage fought back to tie things up at 9-9 and 10-10 (with 1:24 left), but with :25 to play, Eulau netted her eighth goal of the game to put the Scots on top again 11-10. Kaulas made another big save with :08 to play to secure the upset. In addition to getting eight goals from Eulau, Mac received one two scores from Harrington-Abrams and one from
Jillian Benson (Sr., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township).
GAME 3 RECAP - Goalkeeper Kaulus was selected Star of the Game after making 16 saves, but Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) was too strong on defense as the President's won 6-3 to deny the Scots a spot in tomorrow's championship contest.
Instead, Macalester will take on Wheaton (Ill.) in the third-place game at Riley Pool at 11:50 a.m. W&J will play for the title later on against Grove City (Pa.).
Benson, Eulau and
Brianna Besch (So., Cairo, Egypt / Cairo American College) accounted for Macalester's three goals.
GAME 4 RECAP - Wheaton (Ill.) held Macalester to just a single score to claim the third place Bronze Medal. Hannah Stauss-Albee (So., Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) produced Mac's goal.
