Macalester and St. Thomas – a pair of team fighting to get into the four-team MIAC playoffs – played to a 1-1 double overtime tie Sunday night at Macalester Stadium. The Tommies scored first in this closely contested match in the 75th minute, but the Scots came right back 62 seconds later to equalize the tally.
The tie means both sides are still alive in the race for the post-season as they each now have three conference defeats and a tie. It also helps the cause of St. Benedict and St. Olaf, a pair of teams with three losses and no ties, and in control of their own destination for the third and fourth spots behind front-running Carleton and Concordia. The Scots have regular-season games remaining with St. Benedict and Hamline. They can pass St. Ben's with a triumph over the Blazers on Senior Night Wednesday (Oct. 27) and can also pass the Oles if St. Olaf drops one of its remaining matches.
UST's Jenna Savino scored her seventh goal of the year on a Katy Scherer assist at 74:22 to take command of the match and put a halt to Mac's three-game shutout streak.
Macalester then got back into things at 75:24 when
Kat Lenhart (So., Fairview, N.C. / A.C. Reynolds) headed in a corner kick delivered off the foot of
Izzi Speer (Fy., Madison, Wis. / West) for the final tally of the contest. This is the second straight match that Lenhart has headed in a Speer corner kick.
Each goalkeeper played well to keep their teams alive. Mac's
Rosie Glenn-Finer (So., San Francisco, Calif. / Lick Wilmerding) turned away five shots on net, while UST's Allie Byron registered seven saves.
Lauryn Gutierrez (Sr., Hickory, N.C. / St. Stephen's) was denied by Byron on three shots on goal and
Emily Bardwell (Sr., Denver, Colo. / East) was stopped twice.
The Scots out-shot the Tommies 19-12, including 8-6 on tries on goal, and had a slight 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. Macalester is now 10-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in league play. St. Thomas is 10-6-1 on the year, 6-3-1 in the MIAC.
