MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team battled Augsburg University down to the final whistle but came up short, 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the MIAC Playoffs Monday evening at Edor Nelson Field. The Scots end their season with a record of 9-7-2, while the Auggies (10-7-1) move on to face St. Catherine University in the semifinals.
The game went back and forth into the second half, with both teams generating decent scoring chances. In the 69th minute, Abby Rosebur raced down the left side and shot the ball through traffic and into the goal for a 1-0 Augsburg lead. With Macalester pressing, Allison Hookom scored an insurance goal in the 83rd minute, making the outlook bleak for the Scots. But less than four minutes later, sophomore forward
Erica Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) knocked in a loose ball off a corner kick to make it a one-goal game with 3:43 remaining. Macalester had possession in its attacking third down the stretch but was unable to tie the game before time expired. The loss ends the Scots' five-game winning streak and seven-game string without a loss.
Junior goalkeeper
Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) had an outstanding game, with multiple spectacular saves among her nine saves on the night. The Auggies held a 19-14 edge in shots taken, with Claire Smothers making seven saves for Augsburg.
The game also marked the final contest in the Orange and Blue for seniors
Ella Wu-Ancipink (Los Angeles, Calif./Polytechnic School),
Maia Lemov (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central),
Becky Mulcahy (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) and
Hazel Waters (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley). Macalester has 30 players set to return for next season.
