Women’s Soccer: CSC Recognizes Six Scots on Academic All-District Team

| By:
ST. PAUL, Minn. –  Six members of the Macalester College women's soccer team were honored by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) for earning a spot on the NCAA Division III Academic All-District Team, the CSC announced today. Seniors Maia Lemov (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) and Hazel Waters (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) and junior Abbey Birkey (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) are repeat selections, while juniors Georgia LeWin-Mills (St. Paul, Minn./Breck School) and Miya Whiteley (Palo alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and sophomore Shaylee O'Grady (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) are making their first appearances on the Academic All-District Team.

Student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically; have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.50; and have played in 90 percent of their team's games or have started at least 66 percent of their team's games to be considered for Academic All-District and Academic All-American accolades.

This is the third Academic All-District honor for Lemov, a central midfielder who started all 18 games this fall. She tallied two goals, both game-winners, and an assist, receiving All-MIAC honorable mention. A neuroscience and economics double-major, Lemov also made the Academic All-MIAC team the past two years.

Waters started 17 of 18 games as a central defender, anchoring the Scots' backline that contributed to five shutouts. She started 50 games in her career at Macalester. Earlier this month, Waters won the MIAC Elite 22 Award, which recognizes the student-athlete with the highest grade point average among teams that qualified for the MIAC Playoffs. A chemistry major, she also has made the Academic All-MIAC team twice.

Birkey started every game for the Scots this season after registering 12 starts a year ago. She found the net in a 5-0 victory over Bethel on Sept. 11. A biology major at Macalester, Birkey earned a spot on the Academic All-MIAC team in addition to earning Academic All-District honors last year.

LeWin-Mills made the most of her 14 games played, registering five goals and an assist for 11 points before injury ended her season early. During a four-game stretch in which the Scots went 3-0-1, she tallied four goals and an assist, including two goals in a victory over Saint Benedict on Oct. 11. A psychology major, LeWin-Mills also made the Academic All-MIAC team last fall.

After playing in a total of 16 games without a start over her first two seasons, Whiteley proved to be invaluable for Macalester this fall. She started the final 17 games as an outside defender and ended up leading the Scots in minutes played with 1428. Whiteley, who assisted on the tying goal at Concordia on Oct. 14, made the Academic All-MIAC team last year as a neuroscience major.

O'Grady played in 17 games with seven starts in the midfield this season. In a victory at Crown on Sept. 3, O'Grady delivered two assists for her first points as a collegian. She is majoring in data science.
