The red-hot Macalester Scots won their seventh and eighth straight conference games, moving into second place in the MIAC standings by knocking off traditional league stronghold St. Olaf 10-7 and 3-1 at the friendly confines of Nicholson Baseball Field. The Scots are 7-1 on their new diamond.
Macalester is now 8-4 in the MIAC after a 0-4 start and trails only St. Thomas (10-2) in the standings. This is the team's first sweep since 1995 over the Oles, who drop to 15-9 on the season and 4-4 in conference play.
The slugfest in game one took 2 ½ hours and featured 25 hits. St. Olaf led 6-5 before the Scots crossed the plate three times in the fourth inning and two more times in the fifth.
Nick Meerson (Fy., Los Angeles, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake) surrendered just one run in 4 1/3 relief innings to gain his first collegiate win and Macalester received two hits apiece from the first six batters in the lineup. Four Scots collected two RBI's each.
The Scots took the lead for good on a two-run
Robert Williams (Fy., West Covina, Calif. / Northview) single in the fourth.
In the nightcap, which ended shortly before dark, the Scots received strong pitching from starter
Will Chen (So., Edina, Minn.) and relievers
Trevor McCalmont (Fy., Piedmont, Calif.) and
Mitch Glasser (Fy., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School). Chen picked up his first career win at Mac and overcame five walks. Williams drove in the tying and winning runs with a second-inning single.
Macalester plays Tuesday (April 21) at Carleton as the Scots try to extend their MIAC winning streak.
