The 2009 season got underway late Friday night at the Metrodome as Macalester and Edgewood (Wis.) split a doubleheader. The Scots claimed the opener 5-1 as three pitchers allowed the Eagles just four hits, while Edgewood took the nightcap 2-0. Macalester pitchers gave up just three runs and 11 hits in 13 innings of work on the night, while striking out 11 batters.
Much of Macalester offensive production came right off the bat as the Scots crossed the plate three times in the bottom of the first inning in game one. Leadoff batter
Devin English (Jr., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha) started things off with a double.
Nate Wilson-Traisman (Jr., Eugene, Ore. / South Eugene) singled in English and after stealing second base, scored on a two-out double by
Michael Kennedy (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Northside Prep).
Robert Engel (Jr., Sunnyvale, Calif. / St. Lawrence) singled in Kennedy with another two-out hit and the Scots were up 3-0.
Mac added a couple more runs in the third on inning-starting singles by Wilson-Traisman and
Robert Williams (Fy., West Covina, Calif. / Northview), followed by a walk and two hit batters to force in the team's final two runs.
Eric Robinson (Jr., San Francisco, Calif. / The Urban School) pitched the first four frames to pick up the win, giving up just a single run despite allowing seven base runners.
Trevor McCalmont (Fy., Piedmont, Calif.) tossed a couple scoreless innings and
Nick Meerson (Fy., Los Angeles, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake) finished things up in the seventh.
James Murrey (Jr., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) made his season debut a good one in the nightcap, especially considering he was playing basketball for the Scots until eight days ago. Murrey struck out seven batters in five innings of work, but three Edgewood pitchers combined for the four-hit shutout.
The Scots return to the Metrodome Monday (March 2) for a 5 p.m. twinbill with Elmhurst (Ill.). Admission is $5 and fans should enter Gate F.
