Emily Humphreys (Fy., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) scored her first collegiate goal with just :42 left in regulation to lift the Scots past Gustavus Adolphus 1-0 Tuesday night at Macalester Stadium. The Scots improve to 9-3-2 on the season and stay alive in the race for a conference post-season berth at 4-2-1 in the MIAC. The Gusties fall to 6-5-2 overall, 2-4-1 in league play.
The Scots, who are 4-1 in conference competition since a tie at Augsburg, are fighting it out for third place. Concordia (7-0) and St. Thomas (6-0) are undefeated in the MIAC, followed by St. Olaf (5-2), Carleton (4-2), Mac (4-2-1) and St. Benedict (4-3). The top four teams make the MIAC playoffs. The Scots control their own destination since their next three games are against St. Olaf, St. Thomas and St. Ben's – all on the road.
The team's next-to-last home match of the season was closer than the statistics, which had the Scots out-shooting GAC 25-3 and 14-1 in attempts on net. Gustavus earned a 7-0 corner kick advantage despite the big difference in shots.
Finally, after Gustavus goalkeeper Chelsea Bayer had registered 14 saves, Humphreys deposited her long-range shot barely across the goal line at 89:18 on a pass from
Lauryn Gutierrez (Jr., Hickory, N.C. / St. Stephen's).
Emily Bardwell (Jr., Denver, Colo.) launched seven shots on goal and Humphreys added three.
Mac's defense earns its sixth shutout of the campaign with another strong effort. The Scots have surrendered just five scores in seven MIAC matches. Goalkeeper
Tressa Versteeg (Jr., Pella, Ia.) lowered her goals against average to 0.90.
Macalester's next three matches are on the road, starting with a game Saturday (Oct. 17) at St. Olaf.
