ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team controlled play at both ends of the field in a 3-0 victory over UW-Superior Thursday night in the home opener at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots, who did not allow a shot on goal, improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Yellowjackets fall to 0-2-1.
In the 11th minute, junior forward
Erica Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) raced down the left side towards the end line and sent a left-footed pass into the penalty area. Sophomore forward
Mikayla Edmunds (Falls Church, Va./Georgetown Visitation) ran onto the ball and scored with her first touch to put Macalester ahead early. Sixteen minutes later, sophomore
Nisha Wetter (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century) stepped in front of a UW-Superior pass and found senior forward
Adi Nhouyvanisvong (Wayzata, Minn./Minnetonka) on the left side. Nhuoyvanisvong left no doubt, burying a shot into the right side of the goal from 12 yards out for a 2-0 lead.
The Scots added a third goal in the second half. Senior defender
Miya Whiteley (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) sent a free kick from 35 yards out on the left side into the penalty area, where sophomore midfielder
Lilly Staples (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) headed the ball over the oncoming goalkeeper and into the net for a 3-0 lead. The best chance for the Yellowjackets came in the 89th minute, when Reese Brekke bounced a shot off the right post.
Macalester outshot UW-Superior 18-5 while putting 11 shots on target. Yellowjackets goalkeeper Baylee Nygard registered eight saves and kept the score from expanding past 3-0. Senior
