Macalester's 2009 campaign began Saturday in Decorah, Iowa, as the Scots challenged a pair of the top IIAC teams, beating Central 5-4 before falling to powerhouse Luther 9-0.

The Scots came through with victories in four of the six singles matches against Central. Charlie Edelman (Sr., Tucson, Ariz. / University) won 6-4, 6-7, (11-9) at No. 1 singles and Michael Coleman (So., Westlake Village, Calif. / Agoura) won 4-6, 6-3, (12-10) at No. 2 singles to set the stage with a pair of three-set competitive triumphs. Chris Fowler (Fy., Toronto, Ont. / Royal St. George's) took a quick 6-2, 6-2 victory at third singles and at No. 6, Titus Levy (Jr., New York, N.Y. / Fieldston School) came out on top 6-1, 6-4.

Fowler and Lewis Wilcox (Fy., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) claimed an 8-6 win at third doubles, giving Fowler two victories for the match.

Mac played well at first and third doubles later in the day against Luther, the two-time defending IIAC champions. Dropping 8-5 doubles decisions were Edelman and Coleman at No. 1, and Fowler and Wilcox at No. 3. Coleman played well in a 6-3, 6-4 setback at second singles.

The Scots host Martin Luther next Saturday (Feb. 7) at the Leonard Center at 12 noon.
