Ching's walk-off triple caps nine-run comeback as Scots sweep Carleton

Game 1 box score | Game 2 box score

Cody Ching's (Sr., Olympia, Wash.) walk-off three-run bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Macalester to a dramatic 12-11 comeback win over Carleton at Midway Stadium after the Knights jumped to a commanding 10-1 lead. The Scots used that momentum and went on to beat Carleton 8-6 in the nightcap and with the sweep, improve to the .500 level in league play. The sweep puts the team into the race for a berth in the MIAC post-season.

Macalester improves to 13-16 on the season and 6-6 in the MIAC with its third straight conference victory. Carleton has now lost seven straight and drops to 9-21 overall, 2-12 in league play.

Ching's game-winning drive to deep center field came with two strikes and two outs and the Scots down by two.

Carleton crossed the plate eight times in the top of the fifth inning to go up by nine, but Macalester remained determined, responding with six runs in the bottom of the frame. After CC added a run to lead 11-7, the Scots rallied with a pair in the sixth before completing the exciting comeback with their three-run seventh. Carleton collected 19 hits on the game. Elliott Yodh (Fy., Merian, Pa. / Lower Merian) was the game's most effective pitcher and collected his first collegiate win by getting the final six outs and bailing the team out of a sixth-inning jam.

Macalester fell behind again in the second game, but this time it was only 4-0 after two. After that, starter John Simkins (Sr., Galesburg, Ill.) was dominant as the Knights had no runs and just one hit and no walks over the next four innings before scoring twice in the seventh to cut the Mac lead in half to just two runs.

Forty-six percent of batters reached base on the day for the two teams as they combined for 51 hits and a .395 batting mark. The Scots crushed the ball for 25 hits on the day to raise their team batting average over the .300 level on the year.

Several Scots had big days at the plate, led by Nate Wilson-Traisman (So., Eugene, Ore. / South Eugene), who was 6-for-7 with a couple of walks in the two games. Michael Kennedy (So., Chicago, Ill. / Northside Prep) was 5-for-9 with five RBI to boost his batting average to .370, and Adam Kent (Sr., Madison, Wis. / West) was 4-for-7 with four runs scored while taking a pair of hit-by-pitches. The Scots were successful on 7-of-8 stolen base attempts.

Macalester heads right back into action tomorrow for another MIAC doubleheader in Collegeville as the Scots take on St. John's.
