Macalester vs. St. Mary's box score
After dropping two of the three doubles matches, Macalester came through with wins in four of six singles matches to defeat St. Mary's 5-4 in Winona and pick up its first MIAC victory since the '05 season-finale. The Scots were edged by St. Olaf by an identical 5-4 tally in their conference opener last weekend, but this time the singles lineup came up with four straight-set triumphs.
The Scots snap a 19-match MIAC losing streak and go to 2-2 on the season, 1-1 in the MIAC. The Cardinals, who beat Mac 6-3 a year ago, drop to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the MIAC.
Aaron Heerboth (Sr., Tucson, Ariz. / Catalina Foothills) got the action started in singles competition with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2. The difference in the match was Macalester's depth as the Scots claimed wins at fourth, fifth and sixth singles.
Justin Margolies (Fy., Madison, Wis. / West) took a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 4;
Charlie Edelman (Jr., Tucson, Ariz., University) won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5; and at No. 6, the Scots received a 6-4, 6-4 victory from
Michael Coleman (Fy., Westlake Village, Calif. / Agoura). Heerboth and Margolies are now 3-1 on the young season.
Macalester's double's win came at No. 3 as Edelman and Coleman gained an 8-4 win.
Mac takes a break and returns to action in two weeks (Saturday, March 8) against MIAC powerhouse Gustavus in St. Peter.
