Macalester's men's tennis campaign got underway with a pair of matches in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and the Scots came away with a win and a loss to get the season going.  The Scots defeated Ripon 7-2 before dropping a 9-0 match to Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The Macalester vs. Ripon match was a close one and Macalester was able to pull out close wins in three singles matches.  Brad Goldstein (Sr., Tucson, Ariz. / Catalina Foothills) won 6-2, 7-6 at No. 1 singles, Aaron Heerboth (Sr., Tucson, Ariz. / Catalina Foothills) won 7-6, 7-5 at No. 2, and Charlie Edelman (Jr., Tucson, Ariz. / University) took a 7-6, 6-3 battle at No. 5. 

Also gaining singles wins, in much easier fashion, were Paul Mairet (Fy., Rochester, Minn. / Century) at No. 3 and Justin Margolies (Fy., Madison, Wis. / West) at No. 4.

Mac lost a 9-8 match at first doubles, but Heerboth and Titus Levy (So., New York, N.Y. / Fieldston School) won at No. 2 doubles, as did Edelman and Margolies at No. 3.

The Scots came very close to taking a couple wins in singles play against UW-Eau Claire, but lost by 10-8 scores in decisive third sets.  Mairet fell 6-4, 3-6, 10-8  at third singles and at fifth singles Edelman lost 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.

Macalester opens MIAC play Saturday (Feb. 16) against St. Olaf at the Owatonna Tennis Club.
