MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College men's swimming & diving team got off to a strong start at the MIAC Swimming & Diving Championships on the first day at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center Wednesday evening. The Scots currently sit in fourth place in the team standings with 79 points, just one point behind third-place Gustavus.
Senior diver
Dylan Herlihy (Reading, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) started the meet off by qualifying for the finals on the 3-meter board with a score of 307.00. In the finals he scored 322.80 points to finish in sixth place and earn All-MIAC honorable mention status.
The 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore
Kean Pajarillaga (Saipan, Marianas Pacific/Grace Christian Academy), senior
Will St. John (McGaheysville, Va./East Rockingham), sophomore
Jack Schumacher (Golden, Colo./Lakewood) and senior
TJ Palli (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) finished second with a time of 1:34.18.
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the team of junior
Thomas Moore (Philadelphia, Pa./Science Leadership Academy), Pajarillaga, first year
Edward Barnes (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) and sophomore
Max Taufen (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) placed third with a time of 6:58.01. Moore's split time of 1:42.12 broke a 34-year-old school record in the 200-yard freestyle. The previous record of 1:42.25 was set in 1992 by
Adam Burke '92. Both relay finishes earn All-MIAC honors, which require a top-3 finish.
Day 2 of the MIAC Swimming & Diving Championships includes two sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
