BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. – The Macalester College men's golf team carded the day's second-lowest team score on the final day to take fifth place at the MIAC Championships, held Saturday through Monday at Edinburgh USA. The team finish was the best since the 1970s for the Scots, who posted a third-round score of 299 (+11) to pass Concordia and Saint John's and finish with a three-round score of 922 (+58).

First year Ray Zhang (San Ramon, Calif./Dougherty Valley) tied for sixth individually for the program's highest finisher since Nick Santrach '11 placed fifth in 2010. Zhang was tied for 33rd after the first round before shooting even par over the final two rounds, including a -1 71 today, to finish with a three-round score of 224 (+8). Sophomores Liam Sarmiento (Sioux Falls, S.D./O'Gorman) and Aaron Cheng (Mountain View, Calif./Taipei American School) tied for 19th at 232 (+18), with Sarmiento shooting a +2 74 on Monday. Cheng carded a 76 (+4) on both Saturday and Monday. Senior Harry Cheng (Taipei, Taiwan/Heping Municipal) tied for 25th (235) and senior Ben d'Entremont (Cranston, R.I./Moses Brown School) tied for 31st (237).

Bethel won the team title with a score of 891 (+27), edging out Gustavus by five strokes. The Royals' Jesse Balc took medalist honors with a three-round score of 218 (+2).

The Scots, coached by Johnny Greene, will resume their schedule in the spring.
