ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team is ranked fifth for the second week in a row in this week's Region IX coaches poll conducted by the United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced today. The Scots are 5-2 after a loss to St. Olaf on Saturday.
After surrendering an early goal to the Oles in Northfield, Macalester came back with a goal from senior midfielder
Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito) in the 54th minute. First year midfielder
Gaven Johnson (Harrison, Ohio/William Henry Harrison) notched his second assist of the season on the goal, which was Maina's second tally of the year. St. Olaf, which is ranked second in this week's regional poll, found the net in the 63rd minute, then held off the Scots down the stretch. Macalester had a golden chance to tie the score with a minute remaining, but the shot attempt went over the goal.
Augsburg, who is ranked third in the national poll, sits atop the Region IX rankings, followed by No. 19 St. Olaf, Gustavus (RV), UW-Eau Claire and Macalester. Luther remains sixth, with Lake Forest and Carleton swapping spots at seventh and eighth, respectively.
The Scots host UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday, Sept. 24 in a non-conference game. The match starts at 7:30 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
