Men’s Soccer: Scots Top Carleton for MIAC Victory, 3-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Stifling defense and a trio of goals scored by three different players lifted the Macalester College men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Carleton College in a MIAC match Saturday afternoon at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The win evens the conference record for the Scots (6-3) at 1-1, while the Knights fall to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in MIAC play.

Just under 10 minutes into the first half, junior forward Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield) dribbled in on the left side and hit a shot from a sharp angle that was saved by Carleton goalkeeper Leo Kugel but not held. Junior forward Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) pounced on the rebound and shot the ball high over Kugel and into the goal for a 1-0 lead. It was Frantz' team-leading third goal of the season and the 15th of his career.

The score remained 1-0 Scots into the second half, as Macalester limited the Knights' scoring opportunities. In the 59th minute, sophomore midfielder Jonathan Kim (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) received the ball near the left sideline, dribbled into the penalty area and unleashed a shot from 12 yards out into the upper right corner of the goal for a 2-0 Scots lead. In the 78th minute, junior midfielder Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) sent a long pass in the air to first year midfielder Gaven Johnson (Harrison, Ohio/William Henry Harrison), who chested the ball down, took a touch and placed a shot into the upper left corner of the goal with the outside of his foot.

The Macalester defense limited Carleton to just three shots on goal, with first year goalkeeper Justin Ratner (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) making all three saves. Ratner played the first 80 minutes, with junior PJ Pozniak (Phoenixville, Pa./Spring-Ford) playing the final 10 minutes in goal. Both teams took 11 shots, with Kugel recording five saves.

The Scots take on Saint Mary's University on Tuesday, Sept. 30 in another MIAC match. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. in Winona, Minn.
