ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College sophomore
John Ihrke (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and senior
Tyler Edwards (Beaverton, Ore./Oregon Episcopal) were recognized on the All-MIAC team for men's cross country, as the conference announced its year-end awards today. Both runners finished in the top 15 at the MIAC Championships, held Saturday morning at Highland 9 Golf Course, giving the Scots two All-MIAC performers for the second year in a row.
Ihrke covered the 8,000-meter course in 25:53.1 to finish in eighth place. Ihrke's finish is the highest by a Scot since
Wade Eckstrom '10 finished fifth in 2009. Last year he was one spot out of All-MIAC honorable mention in 26th and was the second first year across the finish line.
This is the second All-MIAC honor in a row for Edwards, who finished 15th this year with a time of 26:05.6 after taking 10th at last year's championships. He also received All-MIAC honorable mention in 2023 with a 23rd-place finish.
As a team, Macalester placed third at the MIAC Championships, behind St. Olaf and Carleton, to match last year's performance that marked the program's highest finish since the early 1970s.
Four-time MIAC champion Mohammed Bati of Augsburg was named the MIAC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year, and Connor Hitchcock of St. Olaf was the MIAC Rookie of the Year. St. Olaf's Brian Power was selected the Coach of the Year.
Macalester will send a portion of the team to the Cannon River Closer, hosted by St. Olaf today at 5:00 p.m. The NCAA North Region Meet is Nov. 15 in Colfax, Wis.
